Aliyah Boston makes big decision on future after loss to Iowa

It didn’t take long for South Carolina basketball star Aliyah Boston to make up her mind about her future. Less than 24 hours after the Gamecocks were eliminated from the NCAA women’s basketball championship, Boston has decided to enter the WNBA draft.

Boston was the 2021-22 women’s college player of the year. She is very likely the No. 1 selection in the WNBA Draft. That pick is held by the Indiana Fever.

The Gamecocks lost to Iowa Friday night in the national semifinals, and that was South Carolina’s only loss this season. Boston led her team to the national championship a year ago and she earned the most outstanding player honor in the tournament.

Boston delivered an emotional statement in her tweet that signaled the end of her college career.

“When I first arrived on campus on that warm day in May of 2019, I had no idea what to expect as a 17 year old,” Boston wrote in a post. “Four years later, I can honestly say this was the best, first decision of my life. Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. In this moment, I am truly breathless as I make the next best decision of my life. I have decided to further pursue my dream by declaring for the 2023 WNBA Draft.”

Aliyah Boston, a 6-5 center, averaged 14.1 points and 10.8 rebounds per game during her college career.

South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley gave her full support to Boston, saying she is clearly ready for the next level.

“I slept very well knowing she was with our program. I sleep well knowing that she will definitely make her mark at the next level.”
